What is Gratitude?
Gratitude is one of the most powerful emotions we can experience and it can have major effects on our mental and physical wellbeing. But it may not come naturally to us. Life has a way of getting in the way of healthy choices and it is critical that we are intentional about practicing gratitude. Cultivating a daily practice of gratitude shifts our focus to the positive aspects of our lives, increases our happiness and our ability to overcome challenges, and strengthens our relationships.
Gratitude does not mean we don’t advocate for ourselves and others. We don’t just accept the status quo, but while we’re working for change we can still stop and reflect on the people who support us, the opportunities we have open to us, and the loved ones in our lives. Even when faced with terrible events in our lives, practicing gratitude will set us up to handle them in a healthy and productive way.
The Benefits of Gratitude
Gratitude can have a profound impact on our mental and physical well-being and is critical for us to live a happy and healthy life. Gratitude is an appreciation for what is going well in our lives, even in the face of tough times, we can still recognize positive experiences and people in our lives.
Research has shown that expressing gratitude can lead to increased happiness, better sleep quality, improved physical health, increased self-esteem, and stronger relationships. Additionally, those who practice gratitude tend to be more resilient in the face of adversity, and are better equipped to manage stress and anxiety.

Practicing Gratitude
Here are some simple ways we can cultivate gratitude in our daily lives and begin to experience the benefits.
Keep a gratitude journal - Taking a few minutes each day to write down things we are grateful for can help shift our focus away from what is going wrong towards the positive aspects of our lives. Writing down specific things we are grateful for helps us remember them better (create a memory) and appreciate them more. As you’re reading this, stop and think of one thing you’re grateful for right now. Now, jot it down on a piece of paper or an online journal (here’s a free one I’ve used for over 10 years).
Express gratitude to others - Taking the time to express gratitude to the people in our lives can help strengthen relationships and increase our sense of social support. It can be as simple as saying "thank you" or sending a note of appreciation. Now pause for a minute and think of someone you would like to express gratitude to. A family member? An old friend? A co-worker? A neighbor?
Focus on the present moment - Practicing mindfulness and being present in the moment can help us appreciate the little things in life and recognize the positive experiences around us. Whether it is enjoying a good cup of coffee/tea, taking a walk outside and taking some deep breaths (feel the air expand your lungs), or spending time with loved ones, focusing on the present can help cultivate gratitude.
Reflect on past challenges - Reflecting on challenges we have faced in our lives and how we have overcome them can help us recognize our own strength and resilience, and appreciate the positive aspects of our lives even more. You have come so far, overcome so much - think about that and be grateful that those experiences have helped shape who you are today.
Give back - Giving back to others can help us appreciate what we have and recognize the blessings in our lives. Volunteering, donating to a charity, or simply doing something kind for someone else can help cultivate gratitude and increase our sense of purpose and meaning in life.
The benefits of gratitude can vary from person to person, and the key is to make it a consistent practice that works for you. Whether you jot down a few things you're thankful for daily or weekly, the act of consciously acknowledging gratitude can have a huge positive impact on your overall well-being.
